We hear a lot about the shale-gas operations going on in the U.S, in Western Canada and Quebec, but what about Ontario? Mooncor Oil and Gas Corp. announced in May 2008 that it had begun an “aggressive land acquisition” in southwestern Ontario aimed at purchasing 100,000 acres of Ontario lands to gain exclusive access to the shale gas.
With the help of the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, Mooncor Corp. has identified areas where the potential of exploitation is the greatest: Norfolk County, Kettle Point and the Blue Mountains in the Collingwood area. The latter has been identified as the best shale potential area where Mooncor is also planning to drill. The problem is that the Blue Mountains are part of the Niagara Escarpment, a World Biosphere Reserve.
Regarding of all the problems related to shale-gas extraction, the government of Ontario should be very careful before giving a green light to the industry and inform its population on what is going on in its backyard.
